Birmingham AL Half Marathon

Running the Birmingham, AL Half Marathon on October 6th was an experience that went beyond just another race day—it was a journey of discovery, challenge, and giving back. What set this race apart for me was its heartwarming cause; knowing that all proceeds were directed towards charity added an extra layer of motivation and fulfillment to every mile.

This was my inaugural visit to Birmingham, and to my surprise, I found myself in the midst of mountains! 😄 The city’s hidden topography was a delightful revelation, adding an unexpected twist to my running adventure. The race itself was a test of endurance and spirit, with 13.1 miles of relentless hills that demanded every ounce of my strength and determination. Despite the demanding terrain, the beauty of the challenge was in its uniqueness—each hill, each curve brought its own story, its own struggle, and its own triumph.

Having participated in numerous races, I’ve learned to let go of the pursuit of personal records. Every race is a universe in itself, with distinct challenges and lessons. Coming from Charleston, SC, where the flat landscapes at sea level are what I’m accustomed to, running in the mountainous terrain of Birmingham, AL, was a novel and exhilarating experience. It pushed me out of my comfort zone, teaching me that adaptability and resilience are just as important as speed and stamina.

This race wasn’t just about the physical journey but also about the emotional and spiritual growth that comes from pushing your limits for a cause greater than yourself. The Birmingham Half Marathon will be remembered not just for its endless hills but for the joy of contributing to something meaningful, for the beauty of its landscape, and for the reminder that every challenge is an opportunity to discover new strengths within ourselves.

Running the Smoky Mountains half marathon on September 7th, 2024, was an unforgettable adventure that tested my resilience and rewarded me with breathtaking views. The day before the race, I immersed myself in the natural beauty of Townsend, TN, by hiking around the Smoky Mountains. The serene landscapes and the majestic mountains were the perfect prelude to the race day. The marathon itself was exhilarating; the camaraderie among runners and the scenic route made every step enjoyable. Despite the unexpected twist of rain starting 7 miles in, my spirits remained high. It was my first experience running a half marathon under the rain, adding a layer of challenge but also a sense of achievement as I crossed the finish line. This race was not just about the distance covered but about embracing every moment, rain or shine.

Omaha NE Half Marathon

Embarking on a quest to run a half marathon in all 50 states, my journey brought me to Omaha, NE, on Saturday, October 12th. Marking state number 10 on my list, the Omaha half marathon offered a unique and intimate racing experience that stood out from the larger events I’ve participated in. Despite its smaller scale, the race was no less challenging or rewarding.

One of the distinctive features of this race was its flat course, a runner’s dream for setting personal records or enjoying a steady pace without the daunting hills. However, the race presented its own set of challenges, notably the tighter time limit. With a cutoff of 3 hours and 15 minutes, it pushed me to maintain a consistent pace, a departure from the more lenient 4-hour window commonly found in other races. This added pressure tested my endurance and time management skills, making crossing the finish line even more satisfying.

What truly made the Omaha half marathon memorable was the sense of community and the intimate atmosphere of a smaller race. There was a camaraderie among runners and supporters that is sometimes lost in larger events. The flat terrain, coupled with the crisp Nebraska air, provided a perfect backdrop for a day of personal achievement and collective celebration.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Omaha half marathon and would eagerly lace up my running shoes to experience it all over again. This race not only marked a significant milestone in my 50-state journey but also reminded me of the diverse challenges and joys that come with each race. Whether it’s the size of the event, the landscape, or the race conditions, every marathon brings its own unique flavor to the adventure of running.
